Daily Data

The daily dataset has the CMIP climate projections downscaled and bias-corrected to a 5km grid. Further information on this process can be found in the reports on Methodology and Bias Correction, or on the NIWA site.

Daily climate projections do not predict future weather on a specific date. Potential users of daily data include researchers wanting to compute or investigate additional climate indices from the daily model output, or to input daily climate data into biophysical models such as for assessing the impact of climate change on crop productivity.

When using the daily climate data, this is best analysed on a per-model basis, as it is not meaningful to compute the multi-model mean on individual days. If the multi-model mean is required, this should be computed over long time periods (e.g. 20-year averages) after individual indices (e.g. fire weather) have been computed on a per-model/daily basis.

The daily data is provided on a ‘per-model’ basis covering both the historical period (years 1960-2014) and various scenarios/SSPs (years 2015-2099):

If you need assistance with bespoke data requirements beyond what is readily available from MfE, or if you require climate projections data for a specific measure, future period, or location, then please contact NIWA. See NIWA can help you leverage updated climate projections for more details.
